LEXINGTON, Va. – The 32nd-ranked Washington and Lee men's tennis team won its fourth straight match, defeating Averett University in a non-conference contest by a score of 7-2 on Monday afternoon at the Upper Courts.
The Generals took a 2-1 lead into singles after junior
T.J. Rudden (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) and first-year
Harry Kittredge (Alexandria, Va. / The Field School) posted an 8-5 win at the No. 1 doubles position and the team of sophomores
Mac Morehead (Spartanburg, S.C. / Spartanburg) and
James Torbert (Montgomery, Ala. / Montgomery Academy) won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Rudden polished off Averett's Josh Bottrell at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 6-0 and junior
Alex Fedor (Salem, Ore. / South Salem) notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Stan Martherus at No. 2. Kittredge then clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Thomas Woodcock at No. 4 singles.
The win, W&L's fourth straight over the Cougars as well, improved the Generals' record to 7-1 on the season. Averett slipped to 5-4.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Mary Washington for a 3:00 pm match.
