Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 18 Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated No. 31 Christopher Newport, 7-2, on a Saturday in a battle of Top-6 ranked teams in the Atlantic South region.
With the win, the Generals improve to 10-2 overall, while the Captains fall to 5-5 overall with the loss.
First-years
Kaitlyn Chalker (Kennesaw, Ga. / Rivers Academy) and
Nell Covington (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) defeated Megan Bauer and Kiersten Chang, 8-2, in No. 3 doubles to start the match, before junior
Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy) and first-year
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) won, 8-7 (7-5) at No. 1 to put the Generals ahead, 2-1, going into singles.
Garcia and Carlton posted straight-set singles victories, Garcia at No. 1 by a 6-1, 6-2 score and Carlton at No. 5 by a 6-1, 6-1 margin. Senior
Valerie Marshall (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown), first-year
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and sophomore
Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) also won their singles matches to round out the W&L wins on the day. Marshall defeated Kara Ferner, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, Koziol topped Chang, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4 and Waters bested Amanda Yermal, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.
The Generals will return to the courts on Sunday when they host Randolph-Macon at 11:00 am in their final home match of the regular season.
