LEXINGTON, Va. – The 32nd-ranked Washington and Lee men's tennis team knocked Guilford College from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 9-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the Upper Courts.
Guilford had come into the contest 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC, but found itself in a deep hole early, as the Generals claimed all three doubles matches for an early 3-0 advantage.
The Quakers proved stiffer competition in singles, with two matches going to a third set. However, W&L pulled out both and cruised to the win. Senior
Noah Tapp (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) had the easiest time of the Generals' singles players on his senior day, taking down Tye Sasser by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) gutted out a 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 win over Joe Horne at No. 1 singles, and first-year
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) emerged with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory at No. 3 singles.
W&L is now 28-0 all-time against the Quakers and improves to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the ODAC this season. Guilford fell to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Monday with a 4:00 pm home match against Averett.
