Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 18th ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, 6-3, to No. 15 Mary Washington on Friday afternoon.
The Generals fall to 2-1 overall with the loss, while the Eagles improve to 4-1 overall with the win.
All three W&L wins on the day came from first-year players, as
Gabi Moss (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Chaparral),
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) each won in No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Moss bested Lauren Quinn, 3-6, 6-4 (10-8), while Koziol came back against Amanda Hagino after dropping the first set, 6-2, and won the next two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Carlton won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, over Rachel Cooper.
The Eagles picked up all three doubles wins to head into singles play with a 3-0 lead. Abby Moghtader and Quinn won over Carlton and junior
Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy), 8-1, and Hana Kimmey and Olivia Moore downed Koziol and senior
Valerie Marshall (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) by the same score.
Moghtader defeated Garcia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 1 singles, Marshall retired in No. 2 singles against Claire Coleman and Kimmey earned a straight-set win over junior
Claire Lacksen (Watkinsville, Ga. / Oconee County) at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday when they host Sweet Briar in a 1:00 pm ODAC match on the W&L Upper Courts.
