FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2021 all-conference football team on Wednesday and Washington and Lee claimed 13 total selections, as well as the Coach of the Year Award.
Fourth-year Head Coach
Garrett LeRose was selected to receive his first ODAC Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Generals to the 2021 league title with an 8-3 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark. W&L advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs, before falling to Mount Union in the opening round. LeRose now carries a 19-11 (.633) overall record with the Blue & White.
Out of their 13 all-conference selections, the Generals boast six first team honorees, three each on offense and defense. Senior running back
Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) headlined the offensive selections and was joined by senior offensive lineman
Jared Cordova (Purcellville, Va. / Woodgrove) and junior offensive lineman
Logan Moyer (Germantown, Md. / Quince Orchard). On defense, senior safety
Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist) was joined on the first team by junior defensive end
Robert Poindexter (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett) and junior linebacker
David Onyejekwe (Falls Church, Va. / McLean).
Senior running back
Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion) was the lone offensive player on the second team and he was joined by senior linebacker
Alex Andros (Fredericksburg, Va. / Courtland), senior cornerback
Owen Roberts (Athens, Ga. / Athens Academy) and junior defensive end
Robert Harvey (Lenk im Simmental, Switzerland / Gymnasium Thun). Senior running back
Coby Kirkland (Duncan, Okla. / Duncan), junior defensive lineman
Mustafa Alkhatib (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Discovery) and sophomore quarterback
Stephen Murrin (Fort Worth, Texas / Fort Worth Country Day) rounded out the all-conference selections by garnering third team accolades.
Breece earned All-ODAC honors for the fourth time in his career. He was a first team honoree in 2017, second team in 2018 and third team in 2019. He was also the 2017 ODAC Rookie of the Year when he set a conference record with 1,825 rushing yards. This fall, Breece led the team in rushing with 165 carries for 831 yards and 11 touchdowns. A 2017 AP Second Team All-American, Breece finished his career as the school's all-time leading rusher with 4,541 yards. He is also second all-time for career touchdowns (46).
Cordova is also a repeat All-ODAC selection after posting third team laurels as a sophomore in 2019. He started all 11 games as an offensive guard, helping pave the way for the nation's seventh-leading rushing offense (296.8 ypg).
Moyer received his first career postseason honor after starting all 11 games as an offensive tackle. He was part of a group that allowed just two regular season sacks.
Johnson earned his second all-conference citation after receiving second team honors as a sophomore in 2019. He started all 11 games at safety and was the team's fourth-leading tackler with 50 total stops. He also led the team with three interceptions and tied for the team lead with five pass breakups. Johnson completed his career with 130 tackles, 16 pass breakups, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He did so in just 29 career contests.
Poindexter made his debut on the all-conference team after starting 10 games at defensive end this fall. He posted 42 total tackles and led the ODAC with 5.5 sacks (-24). His 11.5 tackles for a loss (-37) led the team and ranked third in the ODAC this year.
Onyejekwe also earned his first postseason award after starting 10 games at linebacker. He finished second on the team in tackles with 58 total stops. He also posted 5.5 tackles for a loss (-22), 2.0 sacks (-11), one interception and one pass breakup.
Wertz adds his second team selection as an all-purpose back to third team laurels posted under the same designation in 2019. Wertz played in 10 games this fall as a running back, leading the team with a career-best 1,040 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns. He carried the ball 88 times for a career-high 548 yards and four touchdowns, caught two passes for 14 yards and returned 16 kickoffs for a career-high 29.9 average and one touchdown. Wertz claims 2,908 career all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns in just 29 career games.
Andros was a first-time all-conference honoree as a linebacker. He played in all 11 games and finished as the team's leading tackler with a career-high 68 stops. He also had 4.5 tackles for a loss (-21), 1.5 sacks (-5), three pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble. For his career, Andros tallied 90 tackles, six pass breakups, two interceptions, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 25 games played.
Roberts also earned his first career postseason honor after starting at cornerback for a majority of his career. He started all 11 games this year, totaling 26 tackles, five pass breakups and one interception. He played in 28 career contests, registering 59 tackles, 15 pass breakups and three interceptions. He also returned 13 kickoffs for an 18.8 average per return.
Harvey saw action in all 11 games this year, finishing with 40 tackles. His 5.0 sacks (-17) were tied for second in the conference, while his 11.0 tackles for a loss (-29) were tied for fourth in the league. He also added one forced fumble.
Kirkland's third team selection was the first all-conference honor of his career. He started all 11 games as a slot back and was fifth on the team in rushing with 61 carries for 310 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 107 yards and an another touchdown. He finished third on the team in scoring with 48 points. For his career, Kirkland rushed for 795 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 273 yards and two more scores in just 25 career contests.
Alkhatib helped anchor the league's top rushing defense, earning his first career postseason honor. He started all 11 games at defensive tackle, registering 37 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for a loss (-16). He also had one sack (-8) and one pass breakup.
Murrin also received his first all-conference honor while playing in his first season of collegiate football. He played in 10 games, but didn't hold the starting quarterback job until the fourth game of the season. He finished the year as the team's second-leading rusher with 106 carries for 728 yards and five touchdowns. Murrin also completed 28-of-61 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns with five interceptions.
