Box Score ATLANTA – The No. 23 Washington and Lee women's tennis team overcame a pair of deficits to defeat No. 30 Sewanee, 5-4, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday morning.
The Generals improve to 17-7 overall with the win, while the Tigers' season ends at 21-7.
The Tigers took two of the three doubles points to claim a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, with the team of first-year Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La./Mount Carmel Academy) and Georgia Wright (Austin, Texas/Regents School of Austin) earning an 8-7 win over Caroline Adams and Sara Thompson at the No. 2 position.
Garcia then evened the score, 2-2, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ellie Czura in No. 2 singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win by junior Anna Kreynin (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) over Lilly Stephens in No. 6 singles to take a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers regained a lead at 4-3 after wins in No. 1 and No. 3 singles from Catherine Owen and Jordan Besh, respectively, but the Generals claimed the final two singles matches to secure the 5-4 win. Junior Lily Horsley (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's School) defeated Adams, 7-6, 6-4, in No. 4 and senior Mary Hampton McNeal (Beaufort, S.C./South Carolina Connections Academy) dropped Morgan downing, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 5 position.
The Generals will take on the winner of No. 1 Emory vs. North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday at 12:00 pm in the NCAA Third Round.
