Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 23 Washington and Lee women's tennis team was edged by 15th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4, in the final regular season match of the season.
The Generals will enter the ODAC Championship Tournament with a 13-7 overall record, while the Eagles improved to 18-4 overall with the win.
The Eagles claimed the match in No. 3 singles, when Lauren Coleman needed a third set to defeat W&L first-year Georgia Wright (Austin, Texas/Regents School of Austin, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Trailing by a 1-0 match score, junior Anna Kreynin (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and senior Mary Hampton McNeal (Beaufort, S.C./South Carolina Connections Academy) defeated Olivia Moore and Sophie Dixon, 8-1, in No. 3 singles to tie the score.
First-year Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La./Mount Carmel Academy) and Wright, who entered as the 10th-ranked doubles team in the latest ITA Atlantic South Region rankings, pulled out a nail-biting 8-7 win over the 14th-regionally ranked duo of Claire Coleman and Danielle Mirabella, after taking the tiebreaker, 7-5.
After Mary Washington got wins in the No. 2 and No. 6 singles, junior Lily Horsley (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's School) downed Mirabella, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 4 slot to tie things back up, 3-3. Coleman then claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Garcia at No. 2, but McNeal held on in the second set against Dixon, winning, 6-3, 6-4, to re-tie the match at 4-4 before Wright's match ended.
As the top seed for the ODAC Tournament, the Generals will host a quarterfinal match on Wednesday. Opponent and match start time are yet to be determined.
