LEXINGTON, Va. — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released the 2019 Academic All-District Volleyball teams on Thursday, and Washington and Lee junior middle blocker
Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and junior outside hitter
Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) each were selected to the eight-member District 5 team in the Division III category.
Berry, a psychology and strategic communication double-major, led the ODAC in blocks this season with 123, was third in blocks per set (1.04), ninth in kills (284) and third in hitting percentage (.343). Out of the players in the conference with at least 250 kills, Berry had the highest hitting percentage. She tallied double-digit kills in 11 matches this season and had at least five blocks in 11 contests.
Berry's 123 blocks this year are the fourth-most in a single-season in program history. She now has 335 blocks over her three seasons, which is the sixth-most in W&L history. Berry also has a career hitting percentage of .340, which currently is third on the program's all-time list. She earned First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-Region accolades earlier this season.
A neuroscience major, Borthwick finished fifth on the team in kills (136), second on the squad in service aces (25), third on the team in digs (236) and fourth on the team in blocks (27). She had double-digit digs in nine contests this year and registered a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs in a victory over Bridgewater in the ODAC Tournament semifinals.
This is the second straight academic all-district honor for Berry and the first award for Borthwick. Both players will now move onto the national ballot where they have a chance at garnering Academic All-America honors. This is the first time W&L has had two volleyball players receive the recognition in the same year since 2016.
The criteria for the CoSIDA All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District 5, which includes players from small colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The Generals finished the season 24-10, falling in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on November 8.
