NORFOLK, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee men's tennis team claimed its league-record 37th Old Dominion Athletic Conference title with a 5-1 victory over third-seeded Hampden-Sydney in the championship match of the conference tournament.
The championship was W&L's ninth in a row and will give the Generals (12-6) an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Hampden-Sydney (16-6) took the No. 3 doubles match, but the Blue & White posted easy decisions as Nos. 1-2 doubles to carry a 2-1 lead into the singles competition. In singles, the Generals took matches at No. 1, 2 and 3 to post the 5-1 decision. Sophomore Harry Shepherd (Ridgewood, N.J. / St. George's School) closed things out with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Washington and Lee will now wait to see who it will play in the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be released on Monday.
