ASHLAND, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee men's tennis team claimed its league-record 36th Old Dominion Athletic Conference title with a 5-0 victory over third-seeded Guilford in the championship match of the conference tournament.
The championship was W&L's eighth in a row and will give the Generals an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
W&L swept through the doubles competition, claiming fairly easy victories at Nos. 2-3 doubles, while also notching an 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles for a 3-0 lead.
In singles, the Blue & White led in all six matches, but claimed victory with wins at Nos. 5-6 singles. First-year Mitchell Thomas (Houma, La. / Vandebilt Catholic) registered a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 and classmate Thomas Harmon (Tampa, Fla. / Plant) posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
W&L improved to 16-6 on the season, while the Quakers slipped to 12-6 overall.
Washington and Lee will now wait to see who it will play in the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be released on Monday.
