LEXINGTON, Va. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team took down 18th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Upper Tennis Courts.
Mary Washington posted victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles action. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Michelle Fleenor (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Girls Preparatory School) and first-year Rachel Hicks (Mableton, Ga. / Whitefield Academy) defeated Mackenzie Smith and Taylor Diffley by a score of 8-4.
Junior Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) topped Kait Brogan, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and first-year Tessa Hill (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) downed Caroline Mosberg, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Fleenor claimed the No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-4. She beat 41st-ranked singles player, Shelby Harris.
The Eagles claimed the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to knot the contest at 4-4, but first-year Mary Hampton McNeal (Beaufort, S.C. / South Carolina Connections Academy) beat Diffley by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 4 singles to secure the 5-4 victory for the Blue and White.
The Generals improve to an 8-4 overall record with the win and the Eagles drop to 12-3 overall with the loss.
W&L returns to action on April 3 when it travels to Roanoke for an 11:00 am contest and hosts Guilford for a 12:00 pm match.
