Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The top-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat fourth-seeded Shenandoah, 5-2, on Saturday in the ODAC Tournament semifinals at Watt Field.
Sophomore midfielders Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Danielle Spickard each tallied two goals for the Generals (14-3-1), while sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) notched a goal and an assist.
The Hornets (13-7-1) tied the game, 2-2, on an unassisted goal by senior forward Averi Rosena in the 58th minute. Peters put W&L ahead, 3-2, five minutes later off an assist from junior defender Olivia Hunter (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School). Peters received the pass on the far side and headed the ball into the top right corner for the game-winning goal.
Engeland registered her second goal of the game to push the W&L lead to 4-2 in the 77th minute. Engeland had the ball on the near side, but her first shot was blocked by a Shenandoah defender. She quickly recovered possession and fired the ball across the goal into the back of the net. Spickard capped the Generals' five-goal game with her second of the day in the 79th minute to reach the final margin, 5-2.
W&L maintained possession for most of the contest and held a 17-4 advantage in shots. The Generals also took six corners compared to two for the Hornets. Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) played the first 45 minutes at goalkeeper for the Blue and White and allowed one goal, while stopping one shot.
First-year Leeann Passaro (Upper Saddle River, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) saw the final 45 minutes of action for W&L. She made one save and gave up one goal. Senior goalkeeper Erin Septer played the full 90 minutes for Shenandoah and made five saves.
Engeland notched the first goal of the game in the 29th minute off an assist from Peters. The Hornets tied the contest in the 32nd minute on a goal by senior midfielder Kelsie Luddington, but Spickard gave the Blue and White a 2-1 lead heading into intermission by scoring with 4:32 remaining in the first half.
The Generals host the ODAC Championship on Sunday at 2:00 pm at Watt Field. W&L will take on the winner of the other semifinal between second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan and third-seeded Lynchburg, which takes place later on Saturday at 3:00 pm in Lexington.
