LEXINGTON, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals are now 12-4 on the season, while the Tartans fell to 11-4 overall.
W&L swept the doubles matches to hold a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play. Senior duo Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) took down senior pair Bryn Raschke and Angela Pratt, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, senior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) and sophomore Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) topped sophomore Vanessa Pavia and first-year Stacy Chang, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J. / Blair Academy) and first-year Michelle Fleenor (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Girls Preparatory School) downed junior Brooke Tsu and sophomore Nicholle Torres, 8-5.
In singles action, Donnelly defeated Pratt at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2 and senior Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass. / Weston) notched a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over senior Lydia Utkin to secure the win for the Blue and White.
W&L returns to the court on Wednesday when it takes on Sweet Briar and Roanoke.
