Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) totaled a match-high 17 kills, along with 15 digs, four service aces and three blocks to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Roanoke on Tuesday at the Warner Center.
The Maroons (18-3, 6-2 ODAC) took advantage of the Generals' (11-9, 6-0 ODAC) errors in the first set to win, 25-17. W&L responded by claiming the second, 25-15 and the third, 25-22.
Roanoke held an 18-12 lead in the fourth set, but the Generals won 10 of the next 12 points, including three kills by Lausberg, to grab a 22-20 advantage. The Maroons eventually evened the set at 24-24, but a service error and an attack error by Roanoke gave W&L a 26-24 win.
Lausberg needed just 39 attempts to post her 17 kills and only made four errors to hit .333. She moved her career kills total to 1,249. She is now sixth all-time on the W&L career kills list. Rachael Phillips '10 is fifth with 1,254.
Junior middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) and first-year outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) also registered double-digit kills, as the Generals hit .305 as a team. Shand had 13 kills on a .522 hitting percentage and added five blocks and four digs. With her five blocks, Shand has 274 in her career, which is the seventh-best total in program history. Lindsay Ruckert '02 is currently sixth with 291 blocks.
Guignon tallied 10 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) recorded 14 digs and five assists, while sophomore setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had 28 assists.
First-year outside hitter Sydney Daniel (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) led the Maroons with 11 kills, and senior defensive specialist Alexandra Martin (Roanoke, Va./North Cross School) notched a match-high 16 digs. W&L held Roanoke to just a .141 hitting percentage. The Blue and White struggled in the contest with its own errors, committing 17 ball handling errors, seven service errors, seven reception errors and four blocking errors.
The Generals next travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 7:30 pm match.
