Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee recovered from a 10-0 second-half deficit to snap a nine-game losing streak to the Washington and Lee football team, defeating the Generals, 21-19, on Saturday afternoon at Harris Stadium.

W&L had a shot to win the game as time expired, but a 50-yard field goal attempt by sophomore placekicker Matt Underhill (Bethesda, Md./Landon) was blocked by defensive back Glenn Ireland and the Tigers escaped with the win.

The Generals (0-2) carried a 3-0 lead into the halftime break, but marched 69 yards in nine plays on the opening drive of the second half for a 10-0 lead with 10:27 left in the third quarter.  Sophomore running back Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) completed the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers (1-1) responded with an 11-play, 49-yard drive that was capped with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Devante Jones to make it 10-7 with 4:09 left in the third quarter.

W&L blocked a Sewanee punt and took over on the Tigers' 28-yardline early in the fourth quarter. Underhill booted a 35-yard field goal five plays later for a 13-7 lead with 12:23 left in the game.

The Tigers then took the lead (14-13) on the ensuing possession.  Jones sparked a 6-play, 73-yard drive with a 47-yard run and he later scored on a 9-yard run with 9:30 remaining.

W&L fumbled on a 4th-and-2 play from its own 45-yardline on the following possession.  The Tigers recovered at the Generals' 48-yardline and took a 21-13 lead with 1:38 remaining when quarterback Cody Daniel scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's) guided the Generals 70 yards on eight plays, finding first-year running back Duncan Maxwell (Jackson, Miss./Jackson Academy) with a 15-yard touchdown strike with just 35 seconds remaining to make it 21-19.  Nelson ran the option with Dugan on a 2-point conversion attempt that was stopped short of the goal line.

W&L then recovered an onside kick on its own 46-yardline and drove to the Sewanee 34-yardline to set up the kick attempt for the win that was blocked.

The Generals ran for just 186 yards in the contest, finishing with 288 yards of total offense.  Sophomore running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) led the way with 112 yards on 22 carries.  Dugan carried four times for 36 yards and Nelson was 8-of-21 for 102 yards and a touchdown.  Maxwell caught three passes for 35 yards.  Junior linebacker Moody Heard (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) led the defense with 11 tackles.

Sewanee had just 268 yards of offense in the game.  Jones rushed six times for 94 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Andy Moots had 13 carries for 69 yards.  Defensive back Alex Kops paced the Tigers' defense with 14 stops.
