LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 26th-ranked Washington and Lee men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to 12th-ranked Kenyon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The doubles points were tightly-contested, with the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 both going to a tiebreaker. The Generals pulled out the win at No. 1 as junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) and sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) won 9-8 (8-6) on a between the legs winner by Shamshiri, the only play he could make following a lob shot. The team of sophomore John Kirby (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) and first-year Jordan Krasner (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) fell 9-8 after losing the tiebreaker, 7-5.
Trailing 2-1 entering singles play, the Lords notched wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 to close out the match and improve to 19-7 on the season. With the loss, W&L's season ended at 18-5.
Kenyon advances to the third-round where it will faces Emory University on Sunday at 10:00 am.
