PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Generals stole the No. 1 and 3 doubles to start the day, 2-1. The junior team of Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) won, 8-6, and teammates first-year Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) and senior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) also claimed a 8-4 victory, respectively.
Meighan also won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, but the Tartans won four singles matches to pull away for the win. Sophomore Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga. / Marist School) was the only other General to walk away with a singles win.
W&L falls to 11-2 on the year with the loss.
The Generals return to the court on Sunday when it travels to CA Pennsylvannia for a 1:00 pm contest.
