VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 22nd ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened its 2014 spring season with a 9-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday in Virginia Beach.
All of the athletes that competed for W&L (1-0) went 2-0 on the day, led by junior Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) who won No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Buell took down Mia Proctor, 6-1, 6-1 in singles and teamed up with senior Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C. / Hilton Head Prep) to defeat Proctor and Hannah Parent, 8-2 in doubles.
Senior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) and first-year Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) teamed up to take the No. 2 doubles victory, 8-0. Donnelly then claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles play, while Cahill recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 in singles. Mixson also won at No. 4 singles, taking down Hannah Rice, 6-0, 6-0.
Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga. / Marist School) and first-year Aalekhya Tenali (Melbourne, Fla. / West Shore) blanked the Marlins, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles, and won their second victory at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Shutley defeated Lisa Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0, while Tenali took down Sydney Charity, 6-0, 6-0.
The Generals return to the court tomorrow when they take on Bridgewater at home. Action is set to start at 5:00 pm.
