ATLANTA, Ga. – The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team fell to No. 15 Sewanee, 5-4, on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, hosted by Emory University.
The Generals fell behind early, dropping all three doubles matches to the Tigers. Down 3-0 entering singles, W&L won at the No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 positions with the attempt for a comeback. However, Sewanee's early advantage required just two more wins, secured by Lindsey Liles at No. 3 singles and Annie Veron at No. 4 to claim the 5-4 victory.
The four Generals who registered wins on the day were sophomore Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-1), sophomore Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) at No 2 (2-6, 6-2, 6-2), junior Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) at No. 5 (6-2, 6-4) and senior Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) at No. 6 (6-3, 6-4).
With the loss, W&L finishes the year with a 19-8 overall record, while the Tigers improve to 19-5 on the year. Sewanee advances to the third of the NCAA Tournament, where it will face the winner of the Emory/Trinity (Texas) match on Sunday afternoon.
Several individuals will continue to play at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship held at Kalamazoo College on May 23-25. Meighan and Buell will compete in singles, while sophomore Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) and Meighan will participate in doubles competition.
