VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 16th-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team claimed a 5-0 win over second-seeded Roanoke in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship match on Sunday at Virginia Wesleyan College.
The conference title was W&L's 11th straight and the 23rd in the 30 years that the ODAC has awarded a women's team championship.
After sweeping the doubles round, 3-0, the Generals went on to record victories at No. 4 and 5 singles positions for the win. Seniors Sallie Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) and Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) each registered two wins on the day. Douglas joined classmate Jen Hall (Matairie, La./Matairie Park Country Day) for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles and then notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
With the win, the Generals earn an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament, which will begin May 11-13 at selected on-campus sites. W&L returns to action on May 4, when it faces third-ranked Emory at 12:00 pm.
