LEXINGTON, Va. – The 18th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team upset seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 7-2, on Saturday at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the win, W&L improved to 14-4 on the year, while CMU fell to 8-4 overall.
The Generals claimed two wins in the doubles round to go up 2-1 early. They then recorded victories at all but No. 5 singles to run away with the 7-2 win.
Sophomores Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill), Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) each went 2-0 on the day. Meighan claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Kirkland at No. 1 doubles to take the 8-2 win. Kirkland then defeated Angela Pratt, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 singles, while Buell won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
W&L returns to the court on Sunday, April 14 when it faces Guilford for a 2:00 pm contest.
