GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated Skidmore, 6-3, in the consolation round of the ITA Division III Women's Team Indoor Championship on Saturday, hosted by DePauw.
The Generals claimed just one win in the doubles round, as the No. 2 sophomore duo of Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) defeated the team of Melissa Hirsch and Alex Smith, 8-3.
W&L then dropped only one matchup in singles action to solidify the win, with No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 recording victories. Meighan took down Nataly Mendoza, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 1, sophomore Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass./Weston) bested Hirsch, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 and junior Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) claimed the No. 4 win over Smith, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5, senior Christina Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) defeated Robyn Baird, 6-0, 6-1, and junior Chelsea Mixson (Beaufort, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) won the No. 6 spot against Zoe Valella, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.
With the win, the Generals now move on to the fifth-place match, where they will face host DePauw at 7:30 pm this evening.
