GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team has won the ITA Indoor National Championship for the first time in program history, defeating Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at the DePauw Indoor Tennis Center.
The Generals began the day with a 2-1 lead in doubles action, taking the victories at No. 2 and No.3. W&L was able to keep the advantage as they split singles play, 3-3, with the Tartans, beating out CMU at the No. 1, 5 and 6 singles positions.
First-years Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall) each recorded a perfect slate, 2-0, against Carnegie Mellon.
