W&L Baseball Falls to Emory, 11-10

Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. – Emory University rallied for an 11-10 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team at Chappell Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Generals (2-2) struck early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by sophomore first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and sophomore third baseman Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton). W&L added two runs in the top of the second to extend its lead to 5-0, however Emory (6-1) came back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the contest at 5-5.

W&L struck again in the top of the fourth inning, as junior outfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led off with a triple. Senior outfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) followed with a single to drive in Decembrino, and scored just two batters later as Maragos doubled down the right field line, also driving in sophomore shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day). Junior second baseman Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) provided the final run of the inning, bringing home Maragos with a single to center field, giving the Generals a 9-5 edge.

W&L added a run in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles drove in a combined five runs over the next three innings, including three runs in the bottom of the seventh, to leave the game tied at 10-10.

Emory completed its rally in the bottom of the ninth, beginning with a double by first-year outfielder Brandon Hannon. Senior outfielder Gabe Shivers laid down a bunt to advance Hannon over to third, who then scored the winning run on a wild pitch by W&L sophomore Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) for the final 11-10 margin.

Wisotsky (0-1) earned the loss, appearing in just 1/3 of an inning while allowing one run. McMahon (1-0) received the win for Emory, pitching in two scoreless innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout.

Offensively the Generals were led by Maragos, who finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate. He fell one short of the cycle with a single, double and triple while driving in four runs. Decembrino finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs, while Stutts went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) started for W&L and earned a no-decision. He allowed five runs on five hits and three walks. Sophomore Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) pitched two innings, allowing one run while senior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) threw three innings, allowing four runs off of three hits and four walks while also registering four strikeouts.

W&L returns to action on Wednesday as it faces Piedmont at 3:00 pm.
