Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Washington and Lee football team
racked up 541 yards of total offense, including 467 yards rushing,
in posting a 48-17 victory over Sewanee on Saturday afternoon at
McGee Field.
The win was W&L's sixth-straight over the Tigers and tied
Head Coach Frank Miriello with Gary Fallon (1978-94) for the most
wins in program history. Miriello is now 76-74-1 over his 16
seasons with the Generals.
W&L's (1-1) 467 rushing yards are the third-most all-time,
while the 48 points constituted the Generals' highest scoring total
since a 49-28 win over Samford during the 1984 campaign.
Washington and Lee (1-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 7:23 into
the game when sophomore running back Brett Murray (Lookout
Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) capped a 9-play, 71-yard drive with
an 8-yard touchdown run. Sophomore running back Luke Heinsohn
(Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) made it 13-0 when he scored
on a 10-yard scamper just 4:03 later. The PAT failed.
Junior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New
Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) upped the W&L lead to 20-0 with a
10-yard touchdown run at 9:57 of the second quarter and the Tigers
capped the first-half scoring on a 31-yard field goal by sophomore
Trey Knighton with 2:57 to play in the second quarter.
The Generals used rushing touchdowns by Heinsohn and sophomore
quarterback Russell
Stewart (Elkin, N.C./Elkin), along with a passing touchdown
from Westfal to Murray for a 41-10 lead entering the fourth
quarter.
First-year running back Tate Bloomer (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) capped the scoring with 2:04 left in
the game when he rambled 60 yards for a touchdown.
Heinsohn led the Generals' rushing attack with a career-high 170
yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Junior running back
Harrison Hudson
(Salem, Va./Salem) totaled 82 yards rushing on seven carries, while
Murray rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and
caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Westfal
completed 6-of-11 passes for 74 yards and one touchdown and rushed
10 times for 45 yards and one score. Defensively, W&L
limited Sewanee to just 232 yards led by sophomore linebacker Jesse Jenkins
(Roanoke, Va./William Fleming), who notched a team-best 10
tackles. Sophomore linebacker Stephen Peck (Grosse Pointe,
Mich./Cranbrook-Kingswood) notched seven tackles and a sack, while
sophomore linebacker Doug Fraser (Richmond,
Va./Douglas Freeman) contributed six tackles, a sack and a fumble
recovery.
First-year quarterback Lee Schurlknight paced the Tigers' (1-1)
offense by rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and
completing 3-of-6 passes for 15 yards. Junior linebacker
Alfonza Knight posted a team-best 10 tackles and two forced
fumbles.
Washington and Lee now has a bye week and will return to action
on Sat., Sept. 25 when it hosts Averett for a 1:00 pm contest.
