LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 25th-ranked and second-seeded Washington
and Lee men's tennis team claimed a 5-3 victory over 27th-ranked
and top-seeded Hampden-Sydney in the championship match of the ODAC
Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals trailed 2-1 following doubles, but took four of the
first five singles matches that finished for the final
result.
First-year Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) knocked off ODAC
Player of the Year William Moss at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5, to give
W&L a 4-3 lead and junior Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape
Elizabeth) closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tal
Covington and No. 5 singles. White was named the league's Rookie of
the Year.
The win avenged the Generals' earlier loss to the Tigers this
season, as well as a loss to H-SC in last season's ODAC title
match.
W&L is now 15-7 following the win, while Hampden-Sydney
dropped to 15-4 overall.
Washington and Lee will receive the ODAC's automatic bid to the
NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 14.
