GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee
men's and women's swimming teams were in action on
Saturday afternoon in a dual meet with Gettysburg
College. The 13th-ranked W&L men prevailed
by a score of 178-79, but the W&L women fell, 142-122.
The men were led to victory in part due to the
exploits of sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), who
won the 100 back (53.98), 200 back (1:56.14) and 200 IM (2:01.81)
events.
The Generals' 200 medley relay (1:39.09)
and 200 free relay (1:27.70) teams both touched first in helping
W&L improve to 6-3 on the season. The 200
medley team featured first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford,
Del./Salesianum School), sophomores Robert Grattan (Richmond,
Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery) and senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount
Airy). Sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook,
Ala./Mountain Brook), Talluri, first-year Rick Sykes (Wellesley,
Mass./Wellesley) and senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills,
Kan./Shawnee) all competed on the 200 free relay squad.
Barnds added a win in the 50 free with a time
of 21.89, while Dexter touched first in the 100 breast
(1:02.73). Other winners on the day included
senior Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) in the 1000 free
(10:16.36), senior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's
School) in the 200 fly (no times recorded), senior Ian Childers
(Ona, W.Va./Greater Latrobe) in the 200 breast (2:19.13), junior
Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 500
free (4:58.06) and sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery) in the 100 fly (52.18).
For the W&L (4-4) women, sophomore
Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) and senior Sarah
Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) both had fantastic
swims on the day.
Starnes won the 200 free (2:00.10) and 500
free (5:24.30) events, while Simpson won the 100 free (55.82) and
competed on the winning 200 medley (1:55.87) and 200 free (1:43.46)
relay teams.
Joining Simpson on the 200 medley squad were
sophomores Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day)
and Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York), along with first-year
Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham). The 200
free relay team was comprised of Simpson, first-year Megan Bock
(Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School) and senior Jenna Worsham (Cumming,
Ga./Wesleyan School).
First-year Delaney Rolfe (Dallas,
Texas/Highland Park) also picked up a win for the Generals when she
touched first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:16.16.
All winning times constituted pool records as
Gettysburg opened its new natatorium with the meet against the
Generals.
Washington and Lee will return to action on
Saturday as it travels to Catholic University for a 2:00 pm
double-dual with the Cardinals and Marymount.
