Generals Women Claim Nine Event Wins in Dual at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee University women's swimming team claimed nine event victories, including three from Marcy Mortimer, to defeat the University of Mary Washington, 171-91, on Friday evening at Goolrick Natatorium.

The Generals (1-0) won nine of the 14 contested events and swept the top three positions in three individual races. Mortimer led the way with victories in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, while Celia Bredehoeft swept the distance freestyle events. Anna Kate Barr, Amelia Maloof, Sophia Brame-Goldthwaite and Peighton Kruzel also recorded individual victories.


Up Next: Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Generals travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Carnegie Mellon University. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Notable Performances

  • Mortimer led all W&L swimmers with three individual victories, while Bredehoeft added two wins in the distance freestyle events.
  • The Generals swept the top three positions in the 1,000 freestyle, with Bredehoeft leading Katie Crawford (11:24.10) and Maddie Nixon (11:33.47).
  • Barr led another 1-2-3 finish in the 200 butterfly, followed by Virginia Lathrop (2:16.44) and Camlyn Belle (2:18.63). Barr also placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 200 breaststroke.
  • Brame-Goldthwaite edged teammate Bella Santurri by 0.26 seconds to win the 200 backstroke. She also placed third in the 200 IM, completing W&L's third sweep of the top three positions.
  • Gabby Clemens recorded runner-up finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:58.89) and 100 freestyle (54.92), while Tenra Adams took second in the 50 freestyle (25.22).
  • W&L placed second and third in both relay events. The Generals' 400 medley relay of Katelyn Giffen, Mortimer, Kruzel and Adams finished in 4:01.96, while Adams, Frances Fenton, Eliza Osada and Maloof took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.23).
