ALTANTA, Ga. -- Emory's designated hitter Steve Bralver hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth to lift the fifth-ranked Eagles to an 8-6 win over Washington and Lee baseball on Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga.
Emory jumped out to a 6-0 lead as third basemen Frank Pfister launched a three-run homerun in the bottom of the third and rightfielder Dan Molnar hit three-run double in the bottom of the fourth.
The Generals cut the Eagles' advantage to 6-3 in the top of the fifth with a two-run single from junior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./Islip) and an RBI triple from senior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). W&L continued to rally in the top of the eighth as junior third baseman Peter Blue (Butler, Md./Gilman) hit a RBI double down the left field line and freshman leftfielder Peter Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) tied the contest on the next at-bat with a two-run double.
However, two Generals' fielding errors in the bottom of the ninth put EU second baseman Joe Roth on base and in scoring position, and Bralver's long ball gave the Eagles the win.
W&L (2-1) was paced by Cardona, who had three hits in four at-bats with two RBI, and Madden, who batted 2-for-5 with an RBI. Sophomore righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) took the loss for the Blue and White, despite only pitching 0.2 innings and totaling no earned runs. Senior righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) started the game and hurled 3.2 innings of three-hit ball before giving way to the bullpen.
Emory (2-1) was led by Pfister's 2-of-5 day from the plate with three RBI. Bravler's game-winning homerun was his only hit of the day (1-of-2) as was Molnar's three-run double (1-of-4). Righthander Adam Genn was credited with the win as he pitched 1.2 innings, giving up no earned runs and registered two strikeouts.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Piedmont at 3:00 pm in Demorest, Ga.
