W&L Women’s Soccer Knocked Out Of NCAA Tournament By Va Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team saw its season come to a close in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday evening. The Generals played 19th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan to a scoreless draw in the quarterfinal match, but the Marlins advanced to the Final Four on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Both teams had several solid scoring opportunities throughout the contest, but could not find the net. W&L's best scoring chance came late in the second half when sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) one-timed a shot from 10 yards out that sailed over the goal.

Virginia Wesleyan (18-3-3) also produced a flurry during the second half where it took four-consecutive corner kicks, but sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) turned back three shots on spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the penalty kick session, VWC goalkeeper Lindsey Williams turned back two shots, including the final W&L shot, allowing the Marlins to advance on the final kick which was sent to the back of the net by Ally Hodgkins.

Virginia Wesleyan held a 10-9 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Moreo turned back five shots for the Generals, while Williams notched five saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

Washington and Lee ends its season with a 19-1-3 overall record, setting a new school record for victories and allowing a program-low three goals all season.
