W&L Baseball Falls To Emory In Extra Innings, 4-3

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Seven Washington and Lee pitchers held 12th-ranked Emory University to just four hits over 15 innings of work, but fell to the Eagles, 4-3, in extra innings.

The Generals (1-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning as freshman third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) singled home senior first baseman Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) with one out.

The two teams would play the next four innings scoreless, before the Generals struck for another run in the 14th inning. Freshman second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by sophomore centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison). The Eagles (2-0) would strike back with one run in the bottom of the frame to force a 15th-inning.

W&L again took the lead in the 15th frame as sophomore first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led off the inning with a double. Freshman Raymond Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) came into pinch run for McConnell and later scored on a wild pitch. However, the Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom half, one on a wild pitch and the game-winner on a error by senior shortstop Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston).

Senior right hander Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) started the game and pitched seven innings of one-hit ball before giving way to Mulhern, who tossed three innings of one-hit ball. Freshman Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) matched Mulhern in the next three innings, allowing one hit. Edwards was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Offensively, the Generals were led by Edwards and Mackenzie, who each went 2-for-5 at the dish with one RBI. Junior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) was 2-for-6 with a double.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday afternoon as it plays Oglethorpe University at 3:00 pm in the final game of the Generals' Atlanta trip.
