NORFOLK Va. -- The second-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team used two first-half goals to subdue top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, in the ODAC Tournament Championship match Saturday evening. The win marks the 18th-ranked Generals' (15-1-2) second straight conference crown and advances W&L to the NCAA Division III National Championships for the second time in school history.
In the first half, the Generals used an 8-7 advantage in shots to score all the goals they would need on the day. Freshman forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off an assist from sophomore defender Heather Rogers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) at 33:15. Striking while the iron was hot, W&L returned to the Virginia Wesleyan (18-2-2) defensive third 1:40 later and recorded the eventual game-winner off the foot of freshman midfielder Rebecca Cohn (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Acad.). Senior forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) recorded an assist on Cohn's goal.
The Marlins, who entered the game ranked seventh in the nation, held a 10-1 advantage in shots in the second half, and made good on their surging offense at 81:06 when Morgan Gunn scored unassisted.
The W&L defense held for the remainder of the game, however, to give the Generals their second ODAC title.
Junior goalie Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./mount Vernon) made eight saves on the day for W&L, five of which came in the second half.
Laura Wiederwax played all 90 minutes for Virginia Wesleyan, recording three saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host the NCAA South Regional. Washington and Lee will face Greensboro (14-3-2) at 11:00 a.m.
