DANVILLE, Ky. -- Centre College generated 13 of its 19 points off Washington and Lee turnovers and hung on to defeat the Generals, 19-13, in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky.
Centre (4-0) put its first points on the board after Matt Johnson hit W&L junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison), jarring the ball loose. The fumble was recovered by the Colonels at the W&L 5-yard line. One play later, Centre quarterback Brian Behrendt found Bryan Walker for the touchdown.
Nearing the end of the first half, the Colonels' Taylor Hoffer recovered a fumble by W&L sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) at the Generals' 45-yard line. Centre's ensuing 11-play drive culminated with a 32-yard field goal by Nick Zilich, making it 10-0, Centre, at the half.
Following an interception of Behrendt by junior defensive back Ted Maffitt (Houston, Texas/Episcopal), the Generals marched twenty-nine yards to the Centre 11-yard line, from where Dean hooked up with Callaham for an 11-yard touchdown to cut the Colonels' lead to three.
Trailing 16-7, another W&L possession resulted in a fumble, this time by senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights). Following the turnover, Zilich capped the Colonels' drive by splitting the uprights with his fourth field goal of the day and a 19-7 advantage.
The Generals rallied to cut the lead to 19-13 on a 35-yard scoring toss from Dean to Callaham, but the Colonels held on and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
On the offensive side of the ball, W&L (1-2, 1-0) was led by Sullivan who racked up 100 yards on the ground (29 carries for 115 yards) for a school-record tying eighth straight time. Dean completed 7-of-18 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while Callaham caught four balls for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
Maffitt was the Generals' defensive leader, tallying 15 tackles, intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and registering a sack.
Washington and Lee is in action again next Saturday when they host Randolph-Macon at 1:30 pm.
