LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team ended a streak of 19 consecutive losses to Emory & Henry with a 22-9 victory over the Wasps on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (4-5, 3-3) had not beaten E&H since a 21-15 win on September 18, 1982.
W&L assumed a 7-0 lead just 3:04 into the game as senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run.
The Wasps (3-6, 1-4) responded with 7:20 remaining in the opening quarter as sophomore placekicker David Burks (Oak Ridge, Tenn./Oak Ridge) booted a 21-yard field goal to cut the W&L lead to 7-3.
The Generals went up 14-3 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Sullivan with 9:17 remaining in the half, but E&H junior running back Dan Hammonds (Newport, Tenn./Cocke County) scored on a 2-yard run with 2:23 remaining in the half to again cut the W&L lead to 14-9. The ensuing two-point conversion failed and the teams went to the half with W&L leading, 14-9.
Both teams played a scoreless third quarter before Sullivan galloped 19 yards to paydirt with 7:30 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion pass was successful and the Generals' defense held for the 22-9 win.
W&L was led by Sullivan, who rushed 44 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He needs just 68 yards next week to break Marc Watson's school career rushing record of 3,112 yards. Junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) returned to the lineup, completing 11-of-28 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions.
Sophomore fullback Chris Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y./LaSalle) rushed for 42 yards on nine carries and caught five passes for 46 yards. Sophomore linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) led the W&L defense with nine tackles, while senior defensive end Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) recorded six tackles and two sacks.
Emory & Henry was led by junior quarterback Shannon Johnson (Iron Gate, Va./Alleghany), who completed 13-of-27 passes for 116 yards and rushed 13 times for 48 yards. Hammonds rushed for 86 yards and the one touchdown on 23 carries. Senior defensive end Jackie Akers (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon) led the Wasp defense with 12 tackles. The loss assures E&H of its first losing season since 1982.
