LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore running back Ken Clark rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and the Swarthmore defense held Washington and Lee to just 179 yards of total offense as the Garnet Tide upset the Generals, 16-6, on Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet Tide (4-5) assumed the lead on its first possession as Clark scored on a 1-yard plunge with 9:43 remaining in the opening quarter. The PAT was missed and Swarthmore led 6-0.
The Generals (5-5) responded on the ensuing kickoff as sophomore wide receiver Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) returned the kick 80 yards for a score. W&L also missed its PAT attempt and the two teams played scoreless until Clark scored on a 2-yard run with 12:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Garnet Tide added a field goal by Rob Castellucci with 2:42 to play and walked away with the 16-6 win, its first victory over W&L since the 1995 season.
For W&L, junior running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) led the way with 101 yards rushing on 20 carries. He ends the season with a school-record 1,325 yards rushing.
Freshmen quarterbacks Sean McGarvey (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Jacob Trotter (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) combined to complete 8-of-15 attempts for 59 yards. McGarvey was picked off three times. Junior tight end Will Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) caught three arrials for 39 yards.
Junior linebacker Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) completed a stellar season with 15 tackles and a sack. Senior defensive back Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) finished with 10 tackles and an interception.
