LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) rushed for 262 yards and two touchdowns against a Sewanee defense that was ranked 11th in Division III in rushing defense (58.4 ypg) to help lead Washington and Lee to a 27-24 homecoming win over the Tigers.
Watson's performance came on the heels of a 281-yard rushing day last week and he becomes just the fourth W&L player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. His total now stands at an even 1,000 yards.
Sewanee, who scored two defensive touchdowns, got on the board first with a safety just 3:59 into the game as a W&L punt snap sailed out of the back of the end zone.
The Generals (5-2) retaliated on a 27-yard field goal by senior placekicker Andy Vendig (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) with 8:14 remaining in the quarter to make the score 3-2 in favor of W&L. Vendig's field goal tied the school season record for field goals (10).
W&L upped its lead to 6-2 with 27 seconds remaining in the opening quarter as junior placekicker Brad Wiginton (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) booted a 35-yard field goal.
Watson gave the Generals a 13-2 edge with 6:57 left in the second quarter as he broke off a 40-yard touchdown run and sophomore tight end Davis White (Birmingham, Ala./Episcopal) extended the lead to 20-2 on a six-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) with 3:43 remaining in the half.
Sewanee cut the lead to 20-9 as junior defensive end Chase Neal (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) fell on a Watson fumble in the end zone with 10:15 remaining in the third quarter.
Watson atoned for the fumble by scoring on a 61-yard run with 4:03 left in the third period to give the Generals a 27-9 lead.
However, Sewanee again answered with a defensive score, this time on a 71-yard interception return by sophomore linebacker Charles McCauley (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) with 8:11 remaining to make the score 27-15. The Tigers (5-3) then converted a two-point conversion to make the score 27-17.
Sewanee then cut the lead to 27-24 with 2:43 left on a 31-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Max Fuller (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) to sophomore wide receiver Pedy Tehrani (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill).
The Tigers would get the ball back with a chance to win or tie, but Fuller was sacked on the his own 39-yard line as time expired.
Littlehale completed 14-of-23 attempts for 101 yards and one touchdown, while White caught five passes for 44 yards and one score.
Sewanee was led by Fuller, who completed 11-of-18 attempts for 147 yards and rushed 18 times for 68 yards.
Junior linebacker Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) led the Generals' defense with 11 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Sophomore linebacker Matt Stavish (Sterling, Va./Park View) also collected 11 tackles on the day.
Sewanee's defense was led by junior linebacker Jason Wheat (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) and senior defensive end Brian Tyler (Stockton, Ala./Baldwin County), who tallied eight tackles each.
The Generals return to action next Saturday as they travel to Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm contest.
