LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) broke Old Dominion Athletic Conference records for career passing attempts (882) and career passing yards (6,130) by completing 15-of-25 attempts for 203 yards and a touchdown in a 40-13 win over Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (5-5) got on the board with 6:13 remaining in the opening quarter as Batcheller connected with freshman tight end Davis White (Birmingham, Ala./Episcopal) on a four-yard touchdown pass to give W&L a 7-0 lead.
W&L would improve its lead to 14-0 with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter as freshman running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored on a 94-yard run, the longest run in W&L history.
Batcheller then scored on a 19-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Robert Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) with 12:08 remaining in the second quarter to give W&L a 21-0 lead.
The Generals would go into the halftime with a 28-0 lead after Sullivan scored his second touchdown of the day, this time on a four-yard run with 6:48 remaining in the half.
After a pair of W&L field goals in the third quarter, Swarthmore got on the board when junior quarterback Scott Murray (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) hit junior tight end Charlie Ellis (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson) with an eight-yard scoring pass. The extra point was blocked and W&L led 34-6.
W&L tallied its final points of the game as freshman running back Dyllan Rankin (Statesville, N.C./Woodberry Forest) scored on a three-yard run with 7:33 remaining in the game to give the Generals a 40-6 lead.
Swarthmore (1-8) added a touchdown with 10 seconds remaining as senior quarterback Ford O'Connell (Boston, Mass./St. Paul's) hit freshman tight end Robert Melick (Thiensville, Wisc./University of Milwaukee School) with a two-yard touchdown pass to make the score 40-13.
Sullivan led the W&L offense with 16 carries for a career-high 163 yards. He also caught two passes for 48 yards and returned two kickoffs for 32 yards to total 243 all-purpose yards. Senior wide receiver J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon School) caught 11 passes for 131 yards, breaking the school record for career receptions (155) held by Tony Perry (1973-76).
Murray completed 12-of-23 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown to lead the Garnet Tide offense. Sophomore wide receiver Keith McManimen (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) hauled in five passes for 41 yards and freshman running back Ken Clark (Farmingham, Conn./Taft School) rushed 14 times for 38 yards.
The W&L defense was led by sophomore linebacker Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day), who totaled nine tackles, one sack, and one pass breakup.
The Swarthmore defense was paced by junior defensive back Tony Hillery (College Park, Md./DeMatha), who totaled 12 tackles.
