W&L Football Falls to Davidson, 35-28

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) surpassed Brooks Fischer (1993-96) as the school's career leader in passing yards (5,030) and total offense (5,282) in a 35-28 loss to Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (1-4) jumped out to a quick 14-0 first quarter lead on a pair of touchdown runs by freshman tailback Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights). Sullivan scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard scamper with 5:37 remaining and his second on a 28-yard run with 3:04 left.

Davidson (3-3) answered on a one-yard scoring run by senior quarterback Shaun Tyrance (Garner, N.C./Garner) with just 35 seconds gone-by in the second quarter and tied the game when junior Corey Crawford (Newton, N.C./Maiden) returned a blocked punt 29 yards for a touchdown with 6:48 remaining in the first half.

However, W&L would answer with 2:03 remaining in the half when Batcheller scored on an 18-yard run to put the Generals up 21-14.

Once again, Davidson retaliated, this time with just 15 seconds remaining in the half as Tyrance found junior running back John DeBord (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) with a 12-yard scoring strike to send the two teams into the half tied at 21-21.

Riding momentum, the Wildcats assumed their first lead of the game just 43 seconds into the third quarter as Tyrance found senior wide receiver Roland Williams (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) with a 62-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-21.

W&L tied the game on a one-yard touchdown plunge by senior fullback Scott Moses (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) with 8:06 left in the third, but Davidson added another score on a 29-yard touchdown reception by freshman wide receiver Mike Chase (Medina, Ohio/Medina) with 1:27 left in the third to give the Wildcats a 35-28 lead which they would not relinquish.

The Generals drove to the Davidson 22-yard line with 1:31 remaining, but the Wildcats defense held on a fourth down conversion attempt to provide their offense with an opportunity to run out the clock.

Batcheller completed 18-of-33 attempts for 203 yards and ran for another 59 yards to lead the Generals' offense. Sullivan rushed for 111 yards on 25 carries, while senior wide receiver J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon) hauled in seven passes for 107 yards.

The Wildcats were led offensively by Tyrance, who completed 17-of-26 attempts for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Williams caught six passes for 114 yards and sophomore fullback Ryan Pagan (Apopka, Fla./Lake Brantley) carried 22 times for 116 yards.

Washington and Lee will next compete on Saturday, Oct. 16, as it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
