W&L Football Ends Season With a 37-7 Win Over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee football team finished its 1998 regular season with a 37-7 win at Swarthmore (0-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Generals finished the season with a 4-6 record.

The Generals pounded out its greatest offensive output of the season with a total of 422 offensive yards.

W&L got the scoring started early when senior Chas Chastain, playing in his final collegiate game, scored on 29-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Christian Batcheller 1:56 into the game.

Sophomore kicker Andy Vendig extended the lead to 10-0 with a 28-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter.

The Generals then exploded for 21 points in the second quarter. Sophomore running back Hanley Sayers scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 1:28 remaining in the second quarter and then again with 8:57 remaining in the quarter. Batcheller completed the second quarter scoring when he ran two yards to score himself with 3:22 left in the half to give the Generals a 31-0 lead going into the half.

With 4:28 left in the third quarter, the Generals finished off their scoring when junior wide receiver J. T. Malatesta caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Batcheller. The conversion was failed, giving the Generals a 37-0 lead.

The Garnet Tide was held scoreless until 1:59 remained in the game, when Joe Aleffi scored on a three-yard TD run, finishing the scoring at 37-7.

The Generals finished the season with wins in three of their last four games.

Batcheller completed 16-of-26 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. The performance was Batcheller's ninth 200-yard performance of his career.

Sayers led the Generals in rushing with 28 attempts for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Malatesta caught six balls for 73 yards and a touchdown. Chastain had four receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. Seniors David Ritchey and Geoff Gober caught three and two balls, respectively, in their last games as Generals.

Defensively, the Generals were led by freshman lineman Jeff McIntyre, who had six tackles. Senior safety John McAllister and sophomore defensive back Will Baker had five tackles a piece.
