LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman kicker Brad Wiginton (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired to lead the Generals past Sewanee 23-21 in a non-conference college football game on Saturday. The Generals (2-5) rallied from a 14-point deficit with under five minutes to play.
Trailing 21-7 in the fourth quarter, W&L junior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) hit senior wide receiver Chas Chastain (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) on a 44-yard pass play to the Sewanee one-yard line on a fourth-and-14 play. Junior fullback Scott Moses (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) scored on a one-yard run on the next play to cut the Sewanee lead to 21-14 with 4:56 remaining.
W&L's defense then held and the Generals drove 70 yards in just 50 seconds, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore tailback Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) with 51 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 21-20. The Generals attempted a two-point conversion, but Batcheller's pass was incomplete.
W&L then tried an onsides kick and W&L sophomore Tom Monaco (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal Central) recovered Andy Vendig's (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) kick at the W&L 48-yard line. W&L drove into Sewanee territory, but was faced with fourth-and-five at the 34-yard line before Batcheller connected with sophomore tight end Scott Humphreys (Houston, Texas/Memorial) on a nine-yard completion with 11 seconds remaining and W&L then rushed on the field goal unit and Wiginton connected on the game-winner, his first collegiate field goal attempt.
Sewanee (1-6) piled up 375 rushing yards, led by sophomore quarterback Max Fuller (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) with 198 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Sophomore running back Brian Morrison (Pinson Valley, Ala./Pinson Valley) added 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Tigers completed just one pass for eight yards in the contest.
Batcheller completed 17-of-37 passes for 219 yards in the game, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon) in the second quarter. Batcheller threw for 148 of his yards in the fourth quarter.
