DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee football team saw its record fall to 1-4 on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 29-7 decision at Davidson College (3-2).
Following a W&L turnover, the Wildcats took an early lead when running back Eric Ferguson ran two yards for a touchdown with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter to give Davidson a 7-0 lead.
With 10:54 remaining in the second quarter, Davidson quarterback Tommy Dugan called his own number and ran 12 yards for a touchdown. He called his own number on the next play to score the two-point conversion and gave the Wildcats a 15-0 lead going into halftime.
Dugan scored his second touchdown of the day with 10:32 remaining in the third quarter to put Davidson up, 22-0.
The Generals got on the board with 5:50 left in the third quarter when sophomore running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) rumbled 21 yards for a score and cut the Davidson lead to 22-7.
However, Davidson would dash the Generals' hopes for a comeback when Dugan threw a 27-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Roland Williams with 9:32 left, to give Davidson a 29-7 lead that stood for the rest of the game.
Watson led the Generals in rushing with 84 yards on 15 attempts. Junior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) was 17-of-27 for 142 yards and two interceptions. Junior wide receiver J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon) had three receptions for 60 yards.
The Generals will attempt to get back on the winning track when they host Hampden- Sydney next Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Kick-off is at 1:30.
