ATLANTA – The No. 14 Washington and Lee women's tennis team topped No. 10 Trinity (Texas) on Saturday, 4-1, in the second round of the NCAA Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (21-2) picked up the doubles point behind wins at Nos. 2 and 3 from Greer Webb/Margarette Berdy (2) and Sarah Ladd/Haley Stoltz (3). The top doubles match went unfinished with seniors Lauren Long and Grace Lorenz tied, 5-5.
- Berdy was first to finish in singles, gaining a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 to give W&L its second team point. Sophomore Sarah Donnelly then claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to put the Generals one win away.
- The Tigers (17-2) got on the board at No. 4 when Trinity Levy downed sophomore Allie Murrell 6-2, 6-3, but W&L closed out the match at No. 1 when Long overcame a one-set deficit to take down Eva Kovachev, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
- Lorenz and Ladd went unfinished in singles for the Generals, as both were deep into their third sets. Both players dropped their first sets but battled back to claim the second sets.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals have reached 21 wins in a season for the second time in the last three seasons, matching the 2023-24 squad's final record of 21-2.
- Berdy improved to 17-4 in singles this season with her win. She has the most wins on the team this season and the most since Long won 18 in 2023-24.
