NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior
James Haley broke the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse single-season record for points on Saturday to help the 13th-ranked Generals roll to a 19-10 win over No. 7 Gettysburg in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (16-5) got on the board quickly when sophomore Israel Mikkelson won the opening face-off and needed just 13 seconds to take it himself and score for the 1-0 lead.
- W&L added another four goals in the opening frame for a 5-2 lead, before the Bullets (12-5) scored two of the first three goals in the second to make it a 6-4 game.
- After being held to just one goal in over 11 minutes of game time, the Generals burst out to score the final five goals of the first half, which came inside the final five minutes, to build up an 11-4 lead.
- The third quarter was the only frame in which Gettysburg outscored W&L (3-2), before the Generals put together another string of five straight goals in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Haley had three points in the fourth and first-year Tucker Davis assisted on a pair of late goals.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Haley tallied eight points on four goals and four assists to lead all players, while Davis (2g, 3a) and classmates Luke Caldwell (2g, 3a) and Garrett Ferguson (5g) all had five points. Caldwell added three ground balls, and Haley and Davis both caused a turnover.
- The Generals won 20-of-32 faceoffs on the day, led by a 15-for-20 performance from junior Thomas Moxley (6gb). Mikkelson added four wins in six tries with three ground balls.
- Junior Spencer Surface and first-year Lawson Marshall led the W&L defense with three caused turnovers apiece, with Marshall also getting to five ground balls. Senior Colin Beatty was second to Moxley in ground balls for the Generals (5).
- Jackson Barroll was the Bullets' top offensive player with five points on three goals and two assists. Jackson Hearn (2g, 1a) and Ethan Kessler (1g, 2a) both had three points.
- Brian Delduchetto tied for the game high in caused turnovers (3) with five additional Gettysburg players each causing one turnover, as well.
- In goal, W&L sophomore JJ Kim made 11 saves across the duration of the game to pick up the win, while Murphy Hoey made 13 saves in 57:24 of work for the Bullets.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Haley passed Hudson Pokorny '23 (109) for the most points recorded in a season in program history, in addition to joining Pokorny as the only two players in program history to reach 50 goals and 50 assists in a single season.
- Caldwell scored his 50th and 51st goals of the season today, the 10th time in program history a player has scored 50 goals in a season. Caldwell also moved into sole possession of third-most assists in a season (48) and he is one point away from becoming the third player in program history to reach triple digits in a single campaign.
- The Generals reached 16 wins on Saturday for the fourth consecutive season, and it is tied for the third most in program history.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Bullets, 46-32, and had more shots on goal with a final tally of 33-21. Ground balls also favored the Blue and White, 43-30.
- The Bullets committed five more turnovers than W&L (16-11) and went 20-of-23 on clear attempts. The Generals finished the game 26-for-28 on clears.
- Both teams scored on half of their man-up opportunities. The Generals were 2-for-4, while Gettysburg was 1-for-2.

The Generals will make their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Round of 16 on Sunday when they take on No. 5 Christopher Newport at 3:00 p.m.
