BABSON PARK, Mass. – The No. 14 Washington and Lee women's tennis team lost for just the second time of the season on Thursday in a 7-0 final at No. 7 Babson.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The team of Matia Cristiani and Mia Sorrentino put the Beavers (14-3) one point away from the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 to open the day. The Generals (16-2) responded, however, with a 6-3 win at No. 3 from junior Haley Stoltz and sophomore Allie Murrell.
- Babson then claimed the doubles point when Alessandra Cristiani and Elizabeth Shu edged sophomore Greer Webb and first-year Margarette Berdy at No. 2.
- The Beavers then went on to sweep singles play to post their 7-0 win. Only senior Grace Lorenz (2) and Berdy (4) played into third sets, where Berdy fell by three points in the 10-point breaker and Lorenz lost by just four points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Senior Lauren Long squared off against nationally No. 1 ranked Matia Cristiani at No. 1 singles. It marked the second straight season that Long has faced an opponent rated No. 1 at the time of the matchup. Long is 1-1 overall in those two matches.
- Thursday's match was the first time that Murrell and Stoltz paired up in doubles play this season, and it is the 24th different doubles combination used in a match this season.
