LEXINGTON, Va. - Battling down to the wire in a thrilling game that featured a heavy defensive presence, the third-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team staved off a late push to move on to the Round of 16 for the second time in three seasons as they defeated 14th-ranked Christopher Newport University, 61-55.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Captains (24-5) found themselves with an early 6-4 lead after Elizabeth Creed buried a triple and Jessica Dornak knocked down a jumper. Sarah Zimmerman tied the game with a layup, which led to an 8-0 run to give the Generals (30-0) a six-point lead. Sarah Pritz and Bri Shuttlewood traded three-pointers on back-to-back possessions before Riley Bryant capped off a three-point play to send the Blue and White into the second frame with an 18-11 lead.
- CNU trimmed the lead to three with layups on consecutive possessions before Quinn McGuinness knocked down a pair of shots, including a three-pointer, to give W&L a 23-15 lead. The Captains used an 8-4 run to keep the game within four thanks to buckets from Dornak, Mia Wilson, and Creed. Both squads traded baskets down the stretch, with Megan Zimmerman burying a triple to send the Generals into the break with a 32-27 lead.
- Dornak opened the scoring in the second half with a layup before the Generals exploded for a 12-4 run to take a 44-33 lead. Icy Keneah, Riley Bryant, and M. Zimmerman added baskets while Sam Collins nailed a three-pointer. CNU responded with points on back-to-back possessions as Dornak laid it in and McKenna Snively knocked down a shot from beyond the arc. With three seconds to play in the third, Bri Shuttlewood nailed a step-back jumper to send the Blue and White into the fourth with a nine-point lead.
- The Generals maintained a ten-point advantage for four minutes before Madison McKenzie scored on consecutive possessions to make it a seven-point ballgame. CNU kept battling late, scoring seven unanswered to trim the Generals' lead down to four with 1:21 to go. Schleusner and Keneah both knocked down a foul shot to stave off a late comeback, securing a 61-55 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Sarah Zimmerman led all scorers with 12 points and eight boards while dishing out a game-high six assists and four blocks. Megan Zimmerman and Riley Bryant each added ten points off the bench, with M. Zimmerman knocking down four of her five shots, including two triples. Mary Schleusner led the rebounding efforts for W&L, grabbing 11 off the glass with two blocks and a team-high three steals.
- Jessica Dornak led the Captains with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting while grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Hailey Kellog and McKenna Snively led CNU with two assists each, while Hazel Grepps had the lone block for the Captains.
TEAM STATS
- The Blue and White moved to 30-0 on the season, breaking the program record for wins in a single season, which was set by the 2023-24 squad. The win also marked their 17th-straight victory inside Holekamp Gym, which dates back to Feb. 28, 2025.
- The Generals shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, shooting 42.1 percent (8-of-19) in the first quarter. They also knocked down seven shots from beyond the arc, including three in the second frame.
- W&L out-rebounded the Captains by 21 this evening while committing nine fewer turnovers (13) than CNU (22). The Blue and White scored 24 points in the paint while the bench provided 34. They tacked on 19 second-chance points while only scoring eight off CNU's 13 turnovers.

- The third-ranked Generals will take on 23rd-ranked Bethel University (Minn.) in the NCAA Round of 16 on Friday, March 13th. A location and time for the Sectional Rounds will be announced when made available.
