Baseball Drops Game One to No. 4 Lynchburg, Game Two Ends in Tie due to Darkness

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University baseball team traveled to the Hill City for a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, falling in game one before darkness forced a draw in game two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (L, 6-10):
  • The Hornets (8-3-1) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st as Benton Jones and Jack Pokorak drew walks before Quinn Madden singled to left field. Joe Munitz drew the third walk of the inning to bring in Jones before a wild pitch brought in another run. Sean Pokorak drove in the fourth run of the inning as he singled up the middle, driving in a pair of runs to take a 4-0 lead.
  • W&L (5-5-1) got on the board in the top of the 3rd as Nathan DeWitte and Alex Caywood singled to start the inning before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. DeWitte came around to score following an Andrew Thornton sacrifice fly.
  • The Generals made it a one-run game in the 4th as Jackson Rogish and Jonathan French singled, with Rogish coming around to score on a wild pitch. French made it a 4-3 game after scoring on a fielding error by the Hornets' second baseman.
  • Jack Pokorak led off the bottom of the 5th with a solo home run to center field before Madden singled. Madden moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base before scoring on a Kyle Flora sacrifice fly. The Hornets tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th to take an 8-3 lead.
  • In the top of the 8th, Nick Lagges led off with a walk before Camdyn Teague singled. Lagges moved over to third on a passed ball before scoring on a Landen Rucker single to make it a four-run game. Teague scored the next at-bat on a throwing error by the third baseman before Rucker made it an 8-6 ballgame on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Hornets secured the final runs of the game on a single and a fielder's choice to secure a 10-6 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (Tie, 9-9 - 10 Inn.):
  • Lynchburg opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st as Brandon Garcia singled before Benton Jones blasted a two-run home run to give the Hornets an early lead.
  • The Hornets tacked on two more in the bottom of the 2nd as back-to-back singles put runners on the corners before a sacrifice bunt drove in the third run. Garcia singled for the second straight inning, driving in Connor Moore to give them a 4-0 lead.
  • The lead only increased in the 3rd as they registered three runs on three hits to take a seven-run lead.
  • The Generals responded with a six-run 4th inning which featured six hits. Nick Lagges kicked off the inning with a double before Jackson Rogish brought him in on a double to right field. Landen Rucker drew a walk before Jonathan French drove in a run on another double, their third of the inning. Rucker scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-3 ballgame before Nathan DeWitte singled, driving in French to cut the lead to three.
  • With runners on the corners following a Nick Caywood single, Andrew Thornton split the gap for a double, driving in both N. Caywood and DeWitte to make it a one-run game.
  • An inning later, Rucker and French reached base via a single and a hit by pitch before Alex Caywood singled to left field to knot the game at seven.
  • Lynchburg regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Garcia wore a pitch to start the inning before moving over to third on a stolen base and a single. He scored the next at-bat on a J. Pokorak sacrifice fly.
  • Camdyn Teague led off the 7th inning with a double to right field before scoring on a throwing error by the Hornets' pitcher off a Rogish sacrifice bunt.
  • Benton Jones put Lynchburg back in front heading into the 9th with a solo home run to right center, giving the Hornets a 9-8 lead. Andrew Thornton followed that up with a lead off solo home run to left field to send the game to extra innings.
  • After a scoreless 10th frame, the game was called due to darkness.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Tyler Kaltreider (3-0) earned the win on the mound in game one after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out six batters. 
  • In game two, Brody Pasieka tossed six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Logan Tapman of Lynchburg started the game on the mound, allowing four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work with two strikeouts.
  • Alex Caywood led the Generals' offense this afternoon with a 5-for-10 effort at the plate with an RBI. Andrew Thornton drove in a team-high four runs with a double and a home run while Nathan DeWitte drove in three.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Alex Caywood kept his hitting streak alive, extending it to a team-high 11 games while being the only General to record a hit in every game this season. He is hitting a team-best .450 with an 1.244 OPS with 16 hits, six doubles a home run and 12 RBI.

  • The Generals are back in action on Tuesday, March 10 as they welcome No. 22 Shenandoah University to Cap'n Dick Smith Field at 4:30 p.m.
