No. 9 Men’s Golf Finishes T-2nd at Savannah Invitational, McEwen wins Individual Title

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the spring season with a T-2nd place finish while junior Jonathan McEwen finished in first place individually. 

The Blue and White finished the tournament in a tie for second place with No. 11 Oglethorpe at six-under par (282-281-295 – 858). W&L shot seven-over par in the final round this afternoon with 12 birdies, while McEwen and Tim Kaufman both shot an even-par 72 in the final 18. Three of the four scorers recorded birdies on hole 1 (338-yard, par 4) and hole 11 (530-yard, par 5). The Generals played holes 1-9 at two-over par with seven birdies and 20 pars while shooting five-over par on holes 10-18 with five birdies.


Top-ranked Huntingdon claimed the team title with a score of 30-under par, shooting a tournament-best round of 14-under par this afternoon. All four of its scorers finished in the top six while shooting under par. The Generals and No. 11 Oglethorpe tied for second at six-under par, while No. 2 Emory shot seven-under par today to move up five spots to fourth place with a score of six-over par. No. 3 Carnegie Mellon and No. 6 Sewanee finished in a tie for fifth place at seven-over par.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • No. 1 Jonathan McEwen secured his second win of his junior season after shooting even-par (72) in the final round on Tuesday. He registered four birdies today with 10 pars to claim the individual title with a score of 13-under par. He led the tournament in par-four scoring, playing those holes to six-under par. He also led the tournament in birdies with 17 while ranking third in par-five scoring (-6).
  • 14th-ranked Tim Kaufman fell four spots in the final round to finish in a tie for sixth place with a score of five-under par. He carded an even-par (72) in the final round with three birdies and 13 pars. He rattled off nine straight pars from holes nine to 17. He ranked second in the tournament field in par-four scoring, playing those holes to five-under par. He also finished the tournament in a tie for eighth in birdies with 13.
  • William Hull turned in a tie for 26th-place finish after shooting a four-over par 76 this afternoon. He carded three birdies while adding 10 pars in the final round of action. He ended the tournament with a score of three-over par.
  • Charlie Krasnewich finished the first tournament of the spring season in a tie for 55th place with a score of nine-over par. In the final round, Krasnewich carded a pair of birdies and 12 pars to shoot a three-over (75). He finished the tournament tied for 17th in total pars with 35.
  • Turner Edwards turned in a tie for 69th-place finish after shooting 12-over par through 54 holes. On Tuesday, Edwards carded four birdies and 10 pars to shoot a four-over par 76.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Peter Sheakley finished the tournament in a tie for 39th place with a score of 15-over par. He fired a four-over par 75 in the final round today, carding a pair of birdies and an eagle on the 489-yard par 5.
  • Teddy Ross shot 19-over par during 54 holes of action, posting a 10-over par 81 in the final round this afternoon with a birdie and eight pars.
  • Alex Holzapfel finished a few spots behind Ross in a tie for 59th place with a score of 20-over par. In the final round, Holzapfel carded a 78 (+7) with three birdies and nine pars.
  • Reid Heaton rounded out the quartet with a tie for 71st-place finish and a score of 23-over par. Heaton carded three birdies and nine pars in the final round for a six-over par 77.

  • The ninth-ranked Generals are back in action on March 9-10 as they head to Pinehurst, N.C. for the Tiger Invitational at the Forest Creek Golf Club.
