No. 8 Men’s Golf Wraps up First Round of NCAA Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.  - The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee University wrapped up the First Round of the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Mission Resort + Club in the Sunshine State.

The Blue and White were one of 24 teams to complete the opening round before thunderstorms rolled through the area which suspended the remainder of the first round until Wednesday morning. 

The Generals shot six-over par (290) in the opening round on the Las Colinas Course (Par 71), posting the fifth-lowest score among finishing teams on that course. W&L tee'd off on Hole 10 this morning, playing the front nine (Holes 10-18) at three-over par with four birdies and 24 pars while shooting three-over par on the seocnd nine (Holes 1-9) with 26 pars and four birdies. 

Among finishers in the first round, No. 7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is currently leading the first round with a score of four-under par with No. 4 Carnegie Mellon in second at three-under par. No. 12 Kenyon rounds out the top-three with a score of two-under par. Both CMS and Kenyon played El Campeon this morning.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Charlie Krasnewich leads the Generals after the first round following a bogey-free one-under (70). He kicked off his second national championship with a birdie on hole 10, chipping in from the greenside bunker before rattling off 17 straight pars to finish under par.
  • No. 1-ranked Jonathan McEwen shot a 71 (E) in the first round of action. McEwen shot one-under on the first nine (10-18) with three birdies and four pars, registering a pair of birdies in a three-hole stretch. He finished the second nine (1-9) at one-over (36), with birdies on holes two and five while finishing on a high note with back-to-back pars.
  • 11th-ranked Tim Kaufman wrapped up his second national championship opening round with a score of two-over par (73). Kaufman shot two-over on the first nine with a birdie on the 13th hole, a 505-yard par 5, along with five pars. He bounced back by shooting even par on the second nine with a birdie on hole five, a 500-yard par 5, and seven pars.
  • In just the second tournament of his career, Reid Heaton shot a five-over (76) in the opening round. After shooting three-over par in the first two holes, Heaton settled in and rattled off seven straight pars to end the first nine. He made it nine consecutive pars on holes one and two before adding three more from holes four through six. He ended the day with a birdie on hole nine, a 380-yard par 4, to round out the scorers.
  • William Hull rounded out the Blue and White in the first round with a 13-over par (84). Hull shot five-over on the first nine with five pars, including four straight from holes 13 to 16. He shot eight-over on the second nine with pars to cap off the first round.
