McMurphy, Sawicki Lead Women’s Track & Field on Final Day of W&L Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va. - First-years Mad McMurphy and Elizabeth Sawicki of the Washington and Lee University women's track and field team earned top finishes in their respective events on the final day of the W&L Carnival.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • Elizabeth Sawicki and Mad McMurphy both turned in first-place finishes this afternoon for the Blue and White. McMurphy earned gold in the pole vault after clearing a height of 3.53m (11'-07.00"), which is tied for the third-best mark in program history alongside teammate Layla Keadle, who also cleared the height this afternoon to finish in second place. Sawicki turned in a top time in the 400m hurdles, posting the ninth-fastest time in program history with a time of 1:07.11.
  • Abby Cholewa and Gabby Pullen joined McMurphy and Keadle in the pole vault this afternoon, finishing in fifth and eighth place, respectively. Cholewa finished in fifth with a mark of 3.23m (10'-07.00"), the eighth-best mark in program history. Pullen finished in eighth with a mark of 3.08m (10'-01.25"). Joanne Lee joined Sawicki in the 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 1:09.11 to finish in fourth place.
  • Brianna Breyault was the lone General in the 3,000m steeplechase this afternoon, clocking a time of 11:44.23 to finish in third place. In the 200m, Jesma Evans posted a time of 25.60s to finish in third place.
  • The Generals had a pair of student-athletes finish in the top eight in the 100m hurdles, with Lucy Buchmayr leading the way with a third-place finish, posting the fifth-fastest time in program history as she crossed the finish line with a time of 15.19s. J. Lee posted the tenth-fastest time in program history after crossing the finish line in a time of 15.65s to finish in eighth place.
  • In the 400m, Annabelle Sutliff turned in a fourth-place finish after clocking a time of 1:00.61, while Kaia Beddows finished in seventh with a time of 1:01.15. Lilly Versen was the top finisher in the 100m dash, finishing in fourth with a time of 12.41s.
  • Amelia Weenig and Lucie Graziano both finished in the top eight in the 800m, with Weenig posting a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:21.33. Graziano finished in eighth with a time of 2:23.37.
  • Katie Wood finished in eighth in the javelin after recording a toss of 31.77m (104'-02.00"). Mackenzie Morante finished in fourth in the triple jump this afternoon after leaping 10.55m (34'-07.50").
  • The Generals had three throwers finish in the top eight in the shot put, with Emily Jackson finishing in a tie for second place. Jackson recorded a toss of 11.48m (37'-08.00"), the fifth-best mark in program history, to earn silver. Leah Smith turned in a fourth-place finish after posting the ninth-best mark in program history with a toss of 11.27m (36'-11.75"). Bella Timmerding rounded out the crew with an eighth-place finish with a mark of 10.51m (34'-05.75").

  • The Generals are back in action next weekend as they head to Bridgewater College on Mar. 27-28 for the Doc Jopson Invite.
