No. 9 Men’s Golf in Second After 36 Holes at the Savannah Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team is sitting in second place after 36 holes at the Savannah Invitational with Jonathan McEwen and Tim Kaufman leading the field in first and second place.

The Blue and White are in second place after 36 holes of action after putting together a score of 13-under par (282-281 - 563), only three shots from the lead. The squad put together a combined 6-under par performance in round one with 16 birdies and an eagle from McEwen. W&L shot 7-under par in round two with 21 birdies and 38 pars. All four scorers recorded a birdie on the 4th hole (533-yard par 5) and the 17th hole (186-yard, par 3). The Generals played holes one through nine at five-under par while shooting eight-under par on holes 10-18.

Top-ranked Huntingdon sits in first place with a score of 16-under par, shooting 8-under par in both rounds today. Following the Generals in third is No. 11 Oglethorpe with a score of one-over par. No. 6 Sewanne and No. 44 Guilford are tied for fourth with a score of 5-over par.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • No. 1 Jonathan McEwen is off to a strong start in the spring season opener, leading the tournament with a score of 13-under par. In round one, McEwen fired an 8-under 64 with a clean sheet. He recorded six birdies and an eagle on hole 11, a 530-yard par 5. He followed that up with a 5-under 67 in round two, tallying seven birdies and nine pars. He heads into the final 18 with an eight-shot lead.
  • No. 14 Tim Kaufman finished the first two rounds in a tie for second place with four other golfers. He shot a 1-under par 71 in round one, registering four birdies in a six-hole stretch. In round two, Kaufman recorded six birdies, including three on holes 1-4, to shoot a 68 (-4).
  • William Hull finished the first day of action in a tie for 13th place after shooting 1-under par through 36 holes. In round one, Hull carded six birdies and 11 pars to shoot a 3-under par 68. He registered three birdies in round two to cap off the day with a score of 74 (+2).
  • Charlie Krasnewich is in a tie for 48th place after two rounds of action, shooting 6-over par. In round one, he carded a 78 (+6) with one birdie and 12 pars. Krasnewich responded in round two with an even-par 72, recording four birdies and 11 pars.
  • Turner Edwards rounded out the Generals in action in a tie for 63rd place with a score of 8-over par. Edwards registered a 78 (+6) in round one with three birdies, including back-to-back birdies on holes one and two. In round two, he carded a 2-over par 74 while recording 12 pars and back-to-back birdies on holes four and five.

The Generals also had four members of their squad competing at the Port City Invite at the Savannah Country Club. The quartet combined for a score of 50-over par (310-308 - 618) across 36 holes of action.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Teddy Ross is pacing the quartet with a score of 9-over par, putting him in 26th place after 54 holes of action. He recorded seven birdies and 13 pars today, shooting a 76 (+5) in round one and a 75 (+4) in round two.
  • Peter Sheakley posted a score of 11-over par during both rounds today to head into the final day in 36th place, shooting 6-over par (77) in round one and 5-over par (76) in round two. He recorded seven birdies in 54 holes with 14 pars.
  • Alex Holzapfel finished the first two rounds in 48th place with a score of 13-over par, shooting 76 (+5) in round one and 8-over par 79 in the second round. He recorded three birdies and 22 pars today.
  • Reid Heaton rounds out the group with a score of 17-over par, sitting in 70th place heading into the final round. Heaton shot a 10-over par 81 in round one with a birdie and eight pars. In round two, he shot a 78 (+8) with one birdie and 12 pars.
